The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for holding rural and urban local body elections in Himachal Pradesh from April 30 to May 31, modifying the earlier order of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi also pushed the February 28 deadline for completing reconstruction, delimitation, and reservation work to March 31. The court cited logistical difficulties faced by the state government and election authorities in the rain-affected hill state.
However, the Supreme Court emphasized that delimitation cannot be used as a reason to delay elections and made it clear that no further extensions will be granted.
