Supreme Court Denies Bail to Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in CBI Corruption Case

SC Rejects Bail Plea of Punjab DIG in CBI Case

Chandigarh: The Supreme Court of India has refused to grant bail to suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi upheld the decision of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, stating that there was no merit in Bhullar’s bail plea.

The court observed that the High Court’s order rejecting bail was justified, especially considering the seriousness of the allegations. It emphasized that cases involving senior officials and serious financial crimes require stricter scrutiny and cannot be treated as routine bail matters.

However, the Supreme Court granted Bhullar the liberty to approach the court again for bail if the trial does not commence within two months. This observation aims to ensure fairness and transparency in the judicial process.

Earlier, a trial court in Chandigarh had denied bail on January 2, and the High Court upheld the rejection on February 16.

The trial court had noted that the allegations against a senior IPS officer fall under the category of serious economic offences, which warrant a cautious approach while considering bail applications.

The Supreme Court’s decision highlights the judiciary’s firm stance on corruption cases involving public officials, reinforcing the importance of accountability and transparency in governance.
