Sri Lankan PM Harini Amarasuriya Seeks Stronger Business, Tourism Ties with India

Sri Lanka PM Backs Stronger India Ties

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has welcomed stronger business ties, increased Indian investment, and a rise in tourist arrivals from India, reaffirming Colombo’s commitment to deepening cooperation with New Delhi.

Addressing a commemorative dinner marking India’s 77th Republic Day and Sri Lanka’s 78th Independence Day, Dr. Amarasuriya said Sri Lanka looks forward to expanded engagement with Indian businesses and greater people-to-people exchanges through tourism.

The event was organised by the Sri Lanka India Society and attended by diplomats, business leaders, and members of the Indian community. During her address, she described India as Sri Lanka’s “closest partner” and acknowledged the consistent support extended by India during challenging times.

She emphasized that her government remains committed to advancing bilateral cooperation across economic, cultural, and social sectors. According to the Prime Minister, stronger engagement with India will play a crucial role in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and contribute to broader regional stability.

Highlighting the deep historical and cultural ties shared by the two nations, Dr. Amarasuriya said these longstanding connections must now translate into practical collaboration and mutually beneficial growth.

Her remarks come amid growing Indian investment interest in Sri Lanka and a steady rise in tourist arrivals from India, which has emerged as one of the island nation’s largest source markets.

The renewed push for economic and tourism cooperation signals strengthening strategic ties between Colombo and New Delhi at a time when regional partnerships are gaining greater significance.
