SGPC Files FIR Over AI-Generated Controversial Videos of Golden Temple

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has filed a police complaint after three controversial AI-generated videos related to the Golden Temple surfaced online, allegedly hurting religious sentiments.

The videos, reportedly created using artificial intelligence (AI), depict altered and objectionable visuals associated with Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. Following widespread outrage, an FIR was registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Amritsar on January 29 under Sections 299 (hurting religious sentiments) and 353(2) and 353(3) (promoting enmity through content related to a religious site) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

What the Three Videos Show

According to the FIR, the first video posted on Instagram shows a young man wearing shoes inside the sacred parikrama (circumambulatory path) of Sri Harmandir Sahib, which is strictly against Sikh religious code. The video further shows a black car entering the parikrama area, after which the युवक is seen leaving the premises in the vehicle.

The second AI-generated video allegedly presents a digitally altered view of Sri Darbar Sahib, which SGPC claims violates Sikh religious traditions and maryada (religious code of conduct).

In the third video, a couple is shown engaging in objectionable behavior in front of the Golden Temple complex, sparking further outrage among the Sikh community.

SGPC Lodges Complaints

After the videos went viral, SGPC submitted two separate complaints to the Amritsar Police Commissioner. The complaints included Instagram links and account details from where the videos were posted. Acting on the complaints, police registered the case on January 29. A copy of the FIR has now come to light.

Special Committee to Curb AI Misuse

Taking serious note of the growing misuse of artificial intelligence, SGPC had earlier formed a special sub-committee to monitor and address AI-generated digital content that violates Sikh religious sentiments.

The decision was taken during an interim committee meeting held on October 13, 2025, under Resolution No. 1002. The sub-committee has been tasked with consulting experts and recommending measures to prevent the spread of AI-generated videos, images, or other digital content that hurt Sikh religious beliefs and traditions.

The incident has reignited debate over the misuse of AI technology and the need for stricter digital content regulation to protect religious sentiments.
