In a major crackdown on corruption, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested a Junior Engineer posted at Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in Fazilka district for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹4,000.
According to an official spokesperson, the accused, identified as Swaran Singh, was posted at the PSPCL office in Fazilka. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged by a resident of Village Gagan in Fazilka district.
The complainant, who is associated with agriculture, stated that a fault had developed in the electricity meter of his household. Due to the issue, a family member temporarily connected the wire directly to the main supply to restore electricity. During inspection, the accused Junior Engineer allegedly threatened to register a power theft case against the complainant.
Later, when the complainant visited the official’s office, the accused allegedly demanded ₹5,000 to settle the matter and avoid legal action. The complainant recorded the conversation as evidence. After repeated requests, the bribe amount was reportedly settled at ₹4,000.
Following a preliminary inquiry, the Vigilance Bureau team laid a trap and arrested the accused red-handed while accepting the bribe in the presence of two government witnesses.
A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau Police Station in Ferozepur. Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
