Chandigarh: Punjab’s wheat traders have called off their week-long strike after productive discussions with Agriculture and Farmer Welfare Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian and Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goel. The decision paves the way for the smooth resumption of wheat procurement across the state’s mandi markets.
The meeting, held under the guidance of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, involved detailed discussions between the ministers and a delegation of traders led by Vijay Kalra, President of the Federation of Arhtiyas Association of Punjab (FAAP). Following assurances from the government to address legitimate concerns of the traders with empathy, the federation immediately announced the withdrawal of the strike.
Khuddian emphasized the government’s commitment to farmers and traders during the meeting. He stated, “The recent adverse weather has significantly affected our farmers. Whether it is the government, traders, or any other stakeholders, we all thrive because of farmers. No one can face natural calamities alone, and in such times, we must stand together to support each other.”
He assured traders that government doors remain open for continuous dialogue and added, “It is not always necessary to hold formal meetings to resolve issues. Small and cordial discussions can also effectively address major problems. Any trader or farmer facing challenges can reach out to me, and we will solve them together.”
Welcoming the proactive approach of the Punjab government under CM Mann, Vijay Kalra said, “We are one family. Problems are solved through dialogue, and farmers will always remain our top priority.”
The ministers directed officials to ensure transparent, efficient, and uninterrupted wheat procurement. Khuddian reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguard farmers’ interests and promised quick resolution of the legitimate issues raised by the traders.
