Punjab Marks 180th Martyrdom Day of General Sham Singh Attariwala

The Punjab Government today commemorated the 180th martyrdom day of Sikh warrior General Sham Singh Attariwala with full state honors at Narayangarh and Attari. The state-level events were held with deep respect to remember the legendary general’s supreme sacrifice for the Sikh nation.

Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO attended the ceremonies as the chief guest, while Attari MLA Jaswinder Singh Ramdas and Amritsar West MLA Dr Jasbir Singh Sandhu were present as special guests. Floral tributes were offered at the memorial of General Sham Singh Attariwala, where senior civil, police, and army officials also paid their respects.

During the ceremony, Punjab Police personnel presented a ceremonial salute in honor of the martyr. Religious programs were later organized at Attari, where the bhog of Sri Akhand Path Sahib was performed, followed by kirtan and dhadi performances highlighting the life, bravery, and sacrifice of General Sham Singh Attariwala.

Addressing the gathering, Cabinet Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO said General Sham Singh Attariwala would always be remembered for fighting valiantly till his last breath in the Battle of Sobraon during the Anglo-Sikh war. He stated that even the British acknowledged the courage and sacrifice of the Sikh general.

The minister emphasized that martyrs are the true wealth of the nation and remembering them is a moral duty for society. He announced that Attari village would be developed further so that visitors coming to witness the retreat ceremony could also visit the samadhi of General Sham Singh Attariwala and learn about his legacy.

Harbhajan Singh ETO also appealed to people, especially the youth, to actively participate in such commemorative events and stay connected with the rich history of Punjab. He said the Punjab Government bows in respect to the martyrdom of General Sham Singh Attariwala, who laid down his life for the nation and the Sikh community.

On the occasion, family members of General Sham Singh Attariwala and trust representatives were specially honored. The cabinet minister also released a book titled “The Last Pillar of Sikh Rule – General Sham Singh Attariwala,” highlighting the life and contributions of the great warrior. A large number of local residents and school students attended the events and paid floral tributes.
