Chandigarh: In a major welfare initiative aimed at strengthening support for acid attack survivors, the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has made the acid attack victim assistance scheme gender-neutral and increased monthly financial aid.
Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced that the scheme, which was previously limited to women, will now extend benefits to male and transgender survivors as well.
Speaking about the decision, Dr. Baljit Kaur said the government has enhanced monthly financial assistance from ₹8,000 to ₹10,000, aiming to provide stronger financial security and rehabilitation support to victims.
Inclusive Welfare Initiative
The Minister stated that expanding the scheme’s eligibility marks an important step toward inclusivity and equal support for all acid attack survivors, regardless of gender identity. The enhanced financial aid is expected to help beneficiaries meet daily expenses, healthcare needs, and long-term rehabilitation requirements.
She emphasised that the initiative reflects the Punjab government’s broader commitment to social justice and victim welfare.
“This decision goes beyond monetary assistance. It is about restoring dignity, self-respect, and confidence among victims who have suffered violence,” she said.
Focus on Rehabilitation and Dignity
According to the government, the revised scheme aims to ensure both financial stability and social dignity for survivors while promoting inclusive welfare policies across the state.
The Mann-led administration reiterated that it remains committed to supporting victims of violence through comprehensive social security measures designed to empower individuals and aid their reintegration into society.
