The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dealt a major setback to Khadoor Sahib Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh by rejecting his petition seeking parole to attend the ongoing Parliament session.
The High Court had earlier reserved its verdict in the matter and has now dismissed the plea. With this decision, Amritpal Singh will not be allowed to participate in parliamentary proceedings.
It is noteworthy that Amritpal Singh is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam under the National Security Act (NSA). He had approached the court requesting permission to attend Parliament, arguing that he was elected by the public and his absence from the session would amount to a denial of representation for his voters.
In his petition, Singh maintained that attending parliamentary proceedings was part of his constitutional responsibility as an elected representative.
However, following the High Court’s ruling, he will remain in custody and will not be granted parole for the session.
