Punjab Announces Reservation for 154 Panchayat Samiti Chairpersons

Punjab Reserves 154 Panchayat Samiti Posts

In a major move impacting rural politics, the Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Department has issued a notification announcing reservation for Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons in 154 Panchayat Samitis across the state.

The decision is expected to significantly reshape the power structure within rural local bodies in Punjab, triggering fresh political discussions at the grassroots level.

57 Posts Reserved for Scheduled Castes

According to the official notification, out of the total 154 Panchayat Samitis, 57 Chairperson posts have been reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. Among these, 22 positions have been specifically reserved for Scheduled Caste women, ensuring targeted social representation.

The move reflects the government’s focus on inclusive governance and equitable participation in rural leadership roles.

72 Posts Reserved for Women

In addition, 50 Chairperson posts have been reserved exclusively for women. Overall, a total of 72 Panchayat Samiti Chairperson positions have been earmarked for women across categories.

This step is being viewed as a significant push toward women empowerment at the rural governance level, strengthening their participation in decision-making processes.

The notification has set the stage for political realignments in Panchayat Samitis, with parties and local leaders now recalculating strategies based on the revised reservation framework.
