Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has accused Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi of spreading misinformation and making baseless allegations regarding the government’s policies and the recent trade agreement with the United States.
In a social media post, Mr Goyal alleged that Mr Gandhi is attempting to mislead and provoke the farming community through what he described as “fake narratives.” He asserted that the government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently prioritised the welfare and prosperity of farmers through various schemes and policy measures.
Referring to the recently concluded trade deal with the United States, the Minister said that the interests of Indian farmers have been fully protected. He noted that key agricultural products such as Basmati rice, fruits, spices, tea and marine items are expected to gain improved market access, boosting exports and increasing farmers’ incomes. He also highlighted that expanded opportunities for cotton textile exports would raise cotton demand and benefit cotton growers.
Mr Goyal maintained that the agreement would create new export avenues, leading to higher demand and better prices for agricultural produce. He reiterated that the government remains committed to safeguarding farmers’ interests and ensuring their long-term prosperity.
Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also criticised Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress leader has shown little concern for farmers. In a social media post, Mr Chouhan claimed that Mr Gandhi has repeatedly made statements aimed at creating confusion among the public.
He emphasised that the Modi government has consistently placed farmers’ welfare at the centre of its decision-making process. According to Mr Chouhan, the trade agreement with the United States fully safeguards the interests of food grain producers as well as fruit and vegetable growers.
The remarks have intensified the political exchange between the ruling party and the opposition over the implications of the India-US trade deal on the agricultural sector.
