NZ vs ENG: England’s Spin Web Restricts New Zealand to 159, Boost for Pakistan

England Spin Strangles NZ; PAK Hope Alive

In a high-stakes semifinal decider at the R. Premadasa Stadium, New Zealand faltered under pressure and managed just 159 runs against England, giving Pakistan a glimmer of hope in the Super 8 race of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Winning the toss, New Zealand opted to bat first and made a promising start. Openers Tim Seifert and Finn Allen stitched together a 64-run partnership for the first wicket. However, the momentum shifted dramatically when both batters were dismissed within a span of two runs.

Middle-order batter Glenn Phillips tried to stabilize the innings with a brisk 39 off 28 balls, while Seifert contributed 35 and Allen added 29. Yet, no Kiwi batter managed to cross the 40-run mark, as wickets fell at regular intervals.

England’s Spin Strategy Pays Off

England’s decision to rely heavily on spin proved decisive. The Kiwi batting lineup struggled against the spin attack in the middle overs, which effectively choked the run flow.

Rehan Ahmed and Adil Rashid claimed two wickets each, while Will Jacks also picked up two crucial scalps. Liam Dawson chipped in with one wicket, ensuring that all New Zealand wickets fell to spin.

The disciplined bowling performance restricted New Zealand to a modest total, setting up a manageable chase for England.

Relief for Pakistan

The 159-run total comes as encouraging news for Pakistan. Their semifinal hopes hinge on New Zealand’s defeat in this encounter. A loss for the Kiwis would keep Pakistan’s qualification chances alive, easing some of the pressure on the Men in Green.

With the target within reach, all eyes now turn to England’s batting lineup as the semifinal race intensifies.
