Nutrition Expert Dr Archita Mahajan Warns Against Eating Papaya at Night for Sensitive Digestion

Is Eating Papaya at Night Harmful Expert Explains

Eating Papaya at Night May Cause Gas and Acidity in Some People, Says Nutrition Expert

Renowned nutrition dietitian and child care specialist Dr Archita Mahajan, who holds a Master’s degree in Food Nutrition and Dietetics and has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan National Award, has shared important health advice regarding papaya consumption.

Dr Mahajan, who has also been honored by the Punjab Government, Himachal Pradesh Government, and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta, stated that eating papaya at night or in excessive quantities may lead to digestive discomfort in certain individuals.

Although papaya is widely considered beneficial for digestion, its high fiber content and digestive enzyme papain can sometimes trigger gas, bloating, or acidity, especially in people with sensitive digestive systems.

Why Eating Papaya at Night May Cause Problems

According to the expert, several factors may contribute to digestive issues when papaya is consumed late at night:

Gas Formation:
Papaya contains papain and a high amount of dietary fiber, which can affect digestion and lead to gas or bloating in some individuals.

Sensitive Digestion:
People who already experience digestive sensitivity may develop indigestion, burning sensation, or discomfort after eating papaya at night.

Slower Night Digestion:
The body’s digestive process naturally slows down at night. Consuming papaya late may result in bloating, constipation, or acidity.

Feeling of Heaviness:
Eating papaya immediately after dinner can slow digestion and cause a heavy feeling in the stomach.

Best Time to Eat Papaya

Dr Mahajan recommends consuming papaya during the evening or some time before dinner rather than immediately after meals at night. This allows the body to digest the fruit more efficiently.

Recommended Quantity and Precautions

A small bowl of papaya (approximately 100–150 grams) is generally safe for most people at night, but excessive intake may increase the chances of gas formation.

She further advised that individuals who experience acid reflux or bloating after eating papaya should shift consumption to daytime hours for better digestive comfort.

Experts emphasize that while papaya remains a highly nutritious fruit, mindful timing and portion control are essential for maximum health benefits.
