The Central Government has firmly dismissed rumours circulating about a possible nationwide lockdown in India amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran. Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri clarified that all claims regarding a lockdown are completely baseless and misleading.
The minister stated that the government currently has no proposal under consideration to impose any form of lockdown and urged citizens not to panic. He emphasized that authorities are closely monitoring the global situation but there is no reason for public concern.
Minister Calls Rumours Irresponsible
In a statement shared on social media, Hardeep Singh Puri said that spreading such rumours is irresponsible and only creates unnecessary fear among the public. He assured that the government remains fully prepared to handle any emergency situation if required.
No Shortage of Oil or Essential Commodities
The government also clarified that despite ongoing global uncertainties, there is no shortage of oil or essential commodities in the country. According to the Petroleum Ministry, India currently maintains adequate reserves of oil and gas, with supplies secured for at least the next 60 days.
Officials further noted that India now imports crude oil from more than 41 countries. This diversification significantly reduces the potential impact of any disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil Companies Strengthen Preparedness
Oil companies have also enhanced preparedness measures to avoid fuel shortages. Petrol pump operators are being provided increased credit facilities to ensure uninterrupted availability of petrol and diesel across the country.
Government Monitoring Situation Closely
Authorities reiterated that the government is keeping a close watch on every aspect of the evolving global situation and is ready to take immediate action if necessary. Officials expressed confidence that, as in previous global crises, timely decisions and proactive planning will help India avoid any major disruption.
