In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, New Zealand national cricket team defeated the Sri Lanka national cricket team by 61 runs in their Group 2 Super Eight clash at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
With this comprehensive win, New Zealand have moved closer to securing a semifinal berth. Their final Super Eight encounter against England cricket team will be crucial in determining qualification. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have been knocked out of the tournament despite having one match left to play.
Ravindra Shines with Ball
Chasing a target of 169, Sri Lanka endured a disastrous start, crawling to 20/2 in the powerplay and never recovering momentum. The Lankan middle order crumbled under pressure as Rachin Ravindra delivered a match-winning spell, picking up four wickets to restrict the co-hosts to 107/8 in 20 overs.
For New Zealand, Matt Henry claimed two wickets, while skipper Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips picked up one each. Ravindra was named Player of the Match for his outstanding all-round performance.
Santner Leads Recovery
Earlier, New Zealand posted 168/7 after a middle-order collapse threatened to derail their innings. Captain Mitchell Santner anchored the innings with 47 runs, while Cole McConchie remained unbeaten on 31 to guide the Kiwis to a competitive total.
For Sri Lanka, Maheesh Theekshana and Dushmantha Chameera took three wickets each, while Dunith Wellalage claimed one.
