MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney Appointed to India-Switzerland Parliamentary Group

Sahney Joins India-Switzerland Group

Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, has been appointed as a member of the India-Switzerland Parliamentary Group, a key platform aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and strategic cooperation between India and Switzerland.

His appointment comes at a significant time following the conclusion of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA). Switzerland, being the largest economy within EFTA, plays a crucial role in this framework.

During his engagements, Dr. Sahney is expected to interact with senior representatives of the United Nations and various Geneva-based multilateral organizations, including the World Health Organization, World Trade Organization, and International Labour Organization, to promote collaboration in global health, trade, labour, and sustainable development.

Dr. Sahney highlighted that Switzerland is a key strategic partner for India and a global hub for advanced manufacturing, precision engineering, innovation, financial services, and sustainable technologies. He noted that Switzerland is among India’s leading European investors and serves as a gateway for high-technology cooperation, research partnerships, and vocational training initiatives.

Bilateral trade between India and Switzerland stood at approximately $23.35 billion last year, with strong potential in pharmaceuticals, machinery, chemicals, fintech, clean energy, high-value manufacturing, tourism, and people-to-people ties.

Dr. Sahney stated that he will work towards further strengthening India-Switzerland relations, particularly in technology transfer, industrial collaboration, and investment promotion. He also emphasized facilitating Swiss partnerships and joint ventures in Punjab across sectors such as precision engineering, agro-processing, clean energy, cold chain infrastructure, and MSMEs.

The development marks an important step in deepening parliamentary diplomacy and expanding economic cooperation between the two nations.
