The Kisan Sangharsh Committee (Punjab) has announced that its annual state president election will be held on March 15, 2026, at Block Makhu in Ferozepur district. The decision was taken during a joint meeting led by district leaders from Amritsar and Tarn Taran.
District President Harjit Singh Sohi (Amritsar) and Tarsem Singh Kalsi (Tarn Taran) stated that as per the organization’s constitution, leadership elections must be conducted after one year. They recalled that on October 17, 2024, an emergency meeting was convened where former president Harjit Singh Ravi was removed through a no-confidence motion over alleged anti-organization activities. Subsequently, Sukhdev Singh Araya was assigned the responsibility of state president in recognition of his contributions to the organization.
With one year completed, the committee has now scheduled a fresh election to restructure its organizational framework. Besides electing key office bearers, members will also deliberate on important decisions taken by the committee during the past year.
The leaders also strongly condemned the alleged police firing and lathi-charge by the Punjab government on farmers at Village Jioud in Bathinda district during a protest linked to Bharatiya Kisan Union Ekta Ugrahan. They accused both the Punjab government and the central government of failing farmers and alleged that such actions reflect anti-farmer policies.
Calling the incident unfortunate, the committee leaders said that governments at both state and central levels are not doing enough to safeguard farmers’ interests and are instead suppressing peaceful protests.
Several other farmer leaders, including Ram Singh Thehkal, Lakhbir Singh Singhpura, Sukhpal Singh, Raj Singh, Jagtar Singh Kalsi, Gurmej Singh Patti, Surinder Singh Kalanaur, Satinder Singh Thoba, and Secretary Singh Basarkegillan, also addressed the meeting.
The upcoming election and the recent condemnation of government action highlight growing political tensions surrounding farmer issues in Punjab.
