Office-bearers and members of Press Club Amritsar on Monday met Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu to raise long-pending demands related to travel concessions and ease of movement for journalists. The delegation was led by Press Club President Rajesh Gill, who submitted a memorandum outlining key issues affecting media professionals.
The primary demand highlighted in the memorandum was the restoration of the 50 percent concession in railway fares for accredited journalists in Punjab, a facility that was previously available but later withdrawn. The delegation also urged that journalists holding yellow cards should be extended the same benefit, allowing them to travel for professional assignments without financial strain.
Addressing the issue, Rajesh Gill stated that journalists play a vital role in society and are often required to travel extensively to report from the field. He emphasized that affordable travel and logistical support are essential for journalists to perform their duties efficiently and independently.
In addition to railway concessions, the Press Club demanded permanent free movement for journalists at toll plazas across the country. The delegation noted that toll-related delays and expenses often hinder timely field reporting, especially during emergencies or breaking news situations.
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu patiently heard the concerns raised by the journalists and assured them that their demands would be taken up with the concerned authorities. He stated that discussions would be initiated at the appropriate level to explore possible solutions.
Members of Press Club Amritsar expressed optimism following the meeting and said they hope the Central Government will soon take concrete steps to address these long-standing demands, enabling journalists to work without unnecessary obstacles and continue serving the public interest.
