Iran-US Nuclear Talks Resume in Geneva Amid Fresh US Sanctions

Iran-US Nuclear Talks Amid New Sanctions

Diplomats from Iran and the United States are set to meet in Geneva today for the third round of nuclear negotiations, even as Washington imposes fresh sanctions targeting Tehran’s oil trade and weapons networks.

Hope for Breakthrough

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed optimism ahead of the talks, calling them a potential turning point in the long-standing standoff between the two nations. In a public address, he stated that the negotiations are being conducted under the guidance of Ali Khamenei and aim to move beyond what he described as a state of “neither war nor peace.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said a deal with Washington is within reach and termed the current moment a historic opportunity. However, he stressed that progress would depend on diplomacy taking precedence — a remark widely interpreted as referencing earlier threats of military action from Donald Trump, who has also indicated a preference for a diplomatic resolution.

Rising Military and Economic Pressure

The United States has recently deployed a second aircraft carrier group toward West Asia, increasing its military footprint in the region. Analysts warn that if the Geneva negotiations collapse, tensions could escalate significantly, potentially leading to military confrontation and renewed regional instability.

Meanwhile, the United States Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against more than 30 individuals, companies, and vessels allegedly involved in facilitating Iran’s oil sales through what Washington describes as a “shadow fleet.”

The simultaneous advancement of diplomatic talks and escalation of economic and military pressure underscores the fragile balance shaping Iran-US relations. The outcome of the Geneva discussions could play a decisive role in determining whether the region moves toward de-escalation or deeper crisis.
