India-Nepal Rail Services Halted for 3 Days

India-Nepal rail services suspended from March 3-5, 2026 due to Nepal elections. Border travel, buses, and trade activities also restricted. will remain completely suspended for three days in view of the upcoming elections in Nepal scheduled for March 5. Security has been tightened across border areas as a precautionary measure.

According to official information released by Nepal Railways, train operations between Jayanagar (India) and Janakpur (Nepal) will remain suspended from Tuesday, March 3, 2026, to Thursday, March 5, 2026.

During this period, two daily trains operating from Jayanagar to Janakpur and two trains from Janakpur to Jayanagar will not run. The temporary halt aims to ensure smooth conduct of elections and maintain law and order in border districts.

In addition to rail services, movement of buses and private vehicles in Bihar districts bordering Nepal will also face restrictions. Tourist travel and commercial activities will remain suspended during the three-day period. Import and export operations, including those in Madhubani and other adjoining areas, will be temporarily halted.

India and Nepal share deep-rooted cultural, social, and economic ties, often described as the traditional “roti-beti” relationship. Cross-border marriages, trade, and family exchanges are common, and the temporary suspension may affect ordinary citizens on both sides.

Emergency Travel Guidelines Issued

Authorities have issued specific guidelines for emergency travel until March 5. Individuals traveling to Nepal for urgent work must carry valid vehicle documents, government-issued identification, and a special permit. Clearance will be granted only after completing customs procedures. Travelers must also return before evening on the same day.

The administration has advised citizens to complete essential family, marriage, or business-related work by March 2 or postpone travel plans until after the elections, beginning March 6. Avoiding travel during the restricted period has been strongly recommended.
