India’s weather has taken a sudden turn as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across 21 states. According to the department, wind speeds may reach up to 80 kmph, while dark clouds and unstable weather conditions are expected to dominate the skies over the coming days.
The IMD stated that weather conditions across the country will undergo a significant change between March 19 and March 22 due to the combined impact of a western disturbance and cyclonic circulation. Several regions may also experience hailstorms, lightning strikes, and gusty winds ranging between 60 and 75 kmph, with isolated areas likely to witness wind speeds touching 80 kmph.
A temperature drop of around 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is expected, offering temporary relief from rising heat. However, authorities warned that storm activity could create fresh challenges, especially for farmers, fishermen, and daily commuters.
Punjab and Haryana Weather Update
Weather patterns in Punjab and Haryana have already changed under the influence of the western disturbance. Cloudy skies have persisted since morning, with rainfall reported in several areas. Cool winds have led to a sharp temperature decline of up to 8.5 degrees Celsius.
Farmers remain concerned as strong winds and rainfall may damage ripening wheat crops. Meteorologists have forecast light to moderate rainfall along with winds blowing at 40–50 kmph on March 19 and 20.
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for both states during this period, urging residents to stay cautious.
Multiple Weather Systems Active Across India
At present, several weather systems are active simultaneously across the country. A cyclonic circulation has formed in the lower troposphere over western Uttar Pradesh and nearby regions, while another system is active over eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The interaction between these systems is expected to trigger rapid weather changes across northern, eastern, and southern India, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
Advisory for Public and Farmers
Authorities have warned that strong winds may uproot trees and damage electricity poles, potentially disrupting daily life. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, remain indoors during storms, and stay in safe locations.
Farmers, in particular, have been urged to take precautionary measures to protect standing crops from possible weather-related damage over the next two days.
