Himachal Pradesh Records 200% More Rainfall in a Week; Orchards Hit, Clear Weather Expected from April 13

Himachal Pradesh Sees 200% More Rainfall in a Week

Shimla: Unusually intense weather has affected Himachal Pradesh over the past week, with rainfall far exceeding normal levels. According to the India Meteorological Department, the state recorded 52.6 mm of rain between April 2 and 9—nearly 200% above the normal average of 17.6 mm for this period.

Several districts saw extreme departures from normal rainfall. Bilaspur recorded 1289% more rain than usual, while Solan saw 763%, Kangra 708%, Una 573%, Mandi 499%, and Shimla 493% more rainfall than normal.

The heavy rains, combined with hailstorms and snowfall, have significantly damaged horticulture, especially apple orchards—raising concerns among farmers across the region. The weather shift also led to a steep drop in temperatures, with the average maximum temperature in the state falling by 6.4°C. In Dharamshala, temperatures dropped by 9.1°C, bringing the daytime high down to 16°C.

However, relief appears to be on the horizon. Meteorologists say the Western Disturbance is weakening. Sunshine is expected to return to the plains and mid-hill regions, while higher elevations may see light rain. Weather may remain unsettled in upper areas for the next two days, but clearer skies are forecast across the state from April 13, with temperatures likely to rise by 4–5°C by April 15—offering respite from the cold and disruptive weather.
