A major traffic crackdown has been launched by police in Himachal Pradesh targeting bikers from Punjab, after a sharp rise in traffic violations and reckless riding on hill roads.
According to officials, the Himachal Pradesh Police issued more than 950 challans within just two days against motorcycle riders found violating traffic rules. The action comes amid growing complaints of dangerous riding practices across popular tourist routes.
Police stated that many bikers were seen riding without helmets, without number plates, performing triple riding, and driving at high speeds on narrow mountain roads. These violations have led to traffic congestion and increased the risk of serious accidents.
Local residents have also raised strong objections, demanding stricter enforcement against such reckless behavior. The issue has escalated in regions including Kiratpur-Manali Highway, where multiple incidents of unsafe riding have been reported.
In a strong warning, Congress MLA Anuradha Bali from Lahaul-Spiti stated that tourists are welcome, but those who create nuisance or endanger public safety will not be spared. She also urged police to take strict action against violators.
Officials noted a significant rise in biker groups traveling across districts such as Bilaspur, Kullu, Mandi, and Lahaul-Spiti over the past few days. Many riders were seen transporting damaged motorcycles on other bikes and performing risky overtaking on winding roads.
After visiting religious and tourist destinations like Manikaran Sahib, bikers reportedly continued toward Manali and the Atal Tunnel Rohtang, where violations were frequently observed.
Authorities have warned that such negligence not only endangers the riders but also poses a serious threat to other road users in the hilly terrain.
