The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Punjab Government in connection with the parole case of Amritpal Singh and directed it to file its response within 10 days.
Amritpal Singh has challenged the state government’s decision to deny him parole. During the hearing, the court questioned the basis on which parole had been refused.
Counsel for Amritpal Singh submitted that the government cited a potential threat to Punjab’s security but failed to provide any specific reasons to justify the denial. The lawyer further argued that in another case, despite serious charges under the National Security Act (NSA), Member of Parliament Rashid was allowed to participate in parliamentary proceedings. On similar grounds, Amritpal Singh should also be permitted to attend the ongoing Budget Session, the counsel contended.
During the proceedings, the Centre’s counsel presented a letter from the Lok Sabha Speaker stating that the decision regarding parole rests solely with the local authority concerned and that the Speaker has no role in the matter.
The High Court has scheduled the next hearing in the case after 10 days.
