High Blood Pressure Can Damage Eyes Just Like Diabetes, Warns Expert Dr. Archita Mahajan

Headaches, chest pain, irritability, breathing difficulties, tingling in nerves, and dizziness could all signal rising blood pressure.

Dr. Archita Mahajan, a nutrition dietitian, child care homeopathic pharmacist, trained yoga teacher, nominee for the Padma Bhushan National Award, and honored by the Punjab government, explains that elevated blood pressure can weaken eyesight. High BP damages the blood vessels in the retina, leading to blurry vision, bleeding, and even blindness in severe cases—this condition is known as hypertensive retinopathy. It can also trigger other serious eye issues like glaucoma and macular degeneration.

How High Blood Pressure Harms the Eyes:

  • Retina Damage: Uncontrolled high BP harms the delicate blood vessels supplying the retina.
  • Hypertensive Retinopathy: This leads to bleeding, fluid leaks, and swelling in the retina, causing blurred vision.
  • Optic Nerve Injury: Excess pressure causes inflammation in the optic nerve and reduces oxygen flow, potentially resulting in optic neuropathy and vision loss.
