Harish Rana Dies at AIIMS Delhi After Supreme Court Allows Passive Euthanasia

Harish Rana Dies After Passive Euthanasia Approval

Harish Rana, a resident of Ghaziabad who was granted permission for passive euthanasia by the Supreme Court of India, passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences after remaining in a coma for more than 13 years.

According to reports citing official sources, Rana had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS, New Delhi, where the passive euthanasia process was carried out under strict medical supervision. As part of the procedure, life-support systems were gradually withdrawn following legal approval.

A panel of ten doctors supervised the entire process to ensure that the procedure was conducted ethically and in accordance with medical and legal guidelines. Medical teams also made efforts to ensure a dignified and peaceful end-of-life process.

Family members of Harish Rana were provided counseling and emotional support during the procedure, officials said.

The case had drawn significant attention as it highlighted the legal and ethical framework surrounding passive euthanasia in India, a practice permitted under specific conditions following landmark rulings by the Supreme Court.
