Eating on Floor Improves Digestion and Health, Says Senior Dietitian

Sitting on Floor While Eating Boosts Digestion & Health

Senior dietitian at Shah Hospital, a nutritionist, child care expert, master in food nutrition and dietetics, homeopathic pharmacist, and trained yoga teacher, who has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan and honored by the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh Governments, has clarified misconceptions about eating habits.

She stated that eating on the bed is not linked to Rahu or any astrological beliefs. These are myths, and there is no scientific basis for them. However, sitting on the floor while eating has multiple health benefits and can improve digestion naturally.

Sitting cross-legged on the floor, a position known as Sukhasana in yoga, activates the digestive system, stretches the muscles, and enhances blood circulation. This posture helps the stomach fill faster, preventing overeating, and keeps the body flexible.

“Eating on the floor is not just a traditional practice but a healthy habit,” she said. “It strengthens the mind-gut connection, allowing the brain to recognize satiety signals more effectively. Over time, this habit can support weight management and may also help in controlling conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure.”

Experts recommend that gradually adopting this practice during meals can benefit the spine, joints, and overall metabolic health, making it a simple yet effective wellness strategy for people of all ages.
