Renowned nutrition dietitian and child care expert Dr Archita Mahajan has raised concerns about the growing health risks associated with sedentary lifestyles, warning that prolonged sitting habits among both children and adults are increasing cases of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
Dr Mahajan, who holds a Master’s degree in Food Nutrition and Dietetics and is also a homeopathic pharmacist and trained yoga teacher, has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan National Award and honored by the Punjab Government, Himachal Pradesh Government, and the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
She explained that modern lifestyles, including long hours of television viewing and work-from-home routines, have encouraged people to remain seated for extended periods without movement. Sitting continuously in the same position, especially with crossed legs, can significantly increase health risks.
According to her, Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) often develops silently without noticeable early symptoms but can become life-threatening if ignored. The condition occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the leg or arm.
Key Symptoms of DVT
Dr Mahajan highlighted the major warning signs of DVT, including:
- Sudden swelling in one leg, particularly in the calf or thigh
- Pain, stiffness, or cramps while walking or standing
- Warmth around the affected area
- Changes in skin color such as redness, bluish or purple tone
- Hardened veins felt beneath the skin
She warned that if the clot travels to the lungs, it may lead to Pulmonary Embolism, a serious medical emergency marked by sudden breathlessness, severe chest pain, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, or fainting.
Yoga and Exercise for Prevention
Dr Mahajan emphasized that yoga and light exercises can help improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of clot formation. However, she advised consulting a doctor before starting yoga, especially if a clot has recently formed.
Recommended yoga practices include:
- Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose): Improves blood flow toward the heart
- Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog): Enhances circulation and stretches calf muscles
- Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose): Reduces blood pooling in the legs
- Tadasana (Mountain Pose): Strengthens leg muscles and improves posture
- Ankle Pumps: Simple foot movements that help prevent clot formation
She also suggested pranayama techniques such as Bhastrika, Kapalbhati, and Anulom-Vilom to support better circulation and overall wellness.
Dr Mahajan concluded by urging people to stay physically active, avoid prolonged sitting, and adopt healthier daily habits to prevent serious lifestyle-related health conditions.
