She stated that many parents believe diabetes is an adult disease, but medical data shows a worrying increase in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in children over the past two decades.
Rising Diabetes Cases in Children
According to research, the incidence of Type 2 diabetes among children has significantly increased worldwide, including in India. Additionally, the number of Indian children suffering from Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus has also shown a rising trend in recent years.
For parents, this is a matter of serious concern as diabetes is a chronic and costly disease. Without proper health insurance and timely medical intervention, treatment expenses can become a financial burden. Children with diabetes require more specialized medical care compared to adults.
What is Diabetes in Children?
Diabetes in children is a metabolic disorder in which the body is unable to properly break down food and process glucose. This leads to high blood sugar levels. If left untreated, it may cause severe complications such as damage to the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, and other organs.
Types of Diabetes in Children
Type 1 Diabetes (Juvenile Diabetes):
This is the most common form seen in children. It may occur due to genetic factors, environmental triggers, or immune system dysfunction. Even children under the age of five have been affected.
Type 2 Diabetes:
This type occurs when the body does not produce enough insulin or cannot use insulin effectively. It is mainly linked to unhealthy lifestyle habits, obesity, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and family medical history.
Studies also show that children of certain ethnic backgrounds, including Asian populations, may have a higher risk of developing diabetes.
Major Symptoms of Diabetes in Children (4T Rule)
Doctors recommend remembering the “4T” warning signs:
- Toilet: Frequent urination
- Thirsty: Excessive thirst
- Tired: Extreme fatigue
- Thinner: Sudden weight loss
Other symptoms include:
- Increased hunger
- Blurred vision
- Fruity-smelling breath
- Bedwetting after toilet training
- Slow wound healing
- Skin infections (such as yeast infections in girls)
- Irritability and mood changes
Dr. Archita Mahajan emphasized that early diagnosis plays a crucial role in managing diabetes and preventing long-term complications. She advised parents to ensure healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and routine health check-ups for children.
She concluded that awareness, preventive care, and timely treatment are key to protecting children from this growing health threat.
