Recognizing the early symptoms of cancer is extremely important, as timely diagnosis significantly increases the chances of successful treatment, says Dr Archita Mahajan, nutritionist, child care expert and health educator.
Dr Mahajan explains that many early cancer warning signs are often subtle and ignored. However, identifying them at an early stage can greatly improve treatment outcomes and survival rates.
Key Early Warning Signs of Cancer
1. Unexplained Weight Loss
Sudden weight loss of 4–5 kg or more without dieting or increased physical activity may be an early sign of cancer.
2. Persistent Fatigue and Weakness
Constant tiredness that does not improve even after adequate rest, and gradually worsens over time, could be a warning sign.
3. Lumps or Thickening in the Body
A new lump under the skin—especially in the breast, neck, armpit or groin—that increases in size over time should not be ignored.
4. Chronic Cough or Non-Healing Ulcer
A cough lasting more than two to three weeks, voice changes, or a sore/ulcer that does not heal may indicate underlying health concerns.
5. Changes in Bowel or Bladder Habits
Persistent constipation, diarrhea, blood in stool or urine, or pain during urination may signal a serious condition requiring medical evaluation.
Additional Warning Symptoms
- Continuous unexplained pain in any part of the body
- Persistent bloating, abdominal heaviness or loss of appetite
- Abnormal bleeding, including blood in cough, stool, urine or unusual vaginal bleeding
- Difficulty swallowing or feeling like something is stuck in the throat
Dr Mahajan advises that while these symptoms do not always mean cancer, they should never be ignored. Early medical consultation, routine screenings and healthy lifestyle habits play a crucial role in prevention and early detection.
She emphasized that awareness and timely action can significantly increase the success rate of treatment.
