Dr. Archita Mahajan Explains Why Joints Make Popping JSounds, Shares Nutrition Tips

Why Joints Make Popping Sounds Expert Tips

Renowned nutritionist and child care expert Archita Mahajan has explained the scientific reason behind the common “cracking” or “popping” sounds in joints and shared important dietary and lifestyle tips to maintain healthy bones and joints.

Dr. Mahajan, who holds a Master’s degree in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics and has been honored by various state authorities including the Government of Punjab, the Government of Himachal Pradesh, and the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, clarified that the primary reason behind joint cracking sounds is the presence of synovial fluid within the joints.

Why Do Joints Make Cracking Sounds?

According to Dr. Mahajan, small gas bubbles form inside the synovial fluid. When we bend or stretch our joints, pressure builds up, causing these bubbles to burst. This bursting process produces the familiar “pop” or “crack” sound.

She emphasized that this is generally harmless unless it is accompanied by pain, swelling, or stiffness.

Nutrition for Strong and Healthy Joints

Dr. Mahajan highlighted that deficiencies in Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, calcium, and collagen can contribute to joint-related issues. She recommends a balanced diet rich in:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Fish, meat, and eggs
  • Dairy products like milk and yogurt
  • Nuts and whole grains

These foods help maintain bone strength and joint lubrication.

Maintain Healthy Weight and Exercise

Excess body weight puts additional pressure on joints, leading to early wear and tear. A balanced diet combined with regular exercise such as yoga, walking, running, or swimming helps maintain flexibility and reduces joint stiffness.

She also noted that adequate rest is essential, as the body repairs and regenerates tissues during sleep.

Avoid Poor Posture and Harmful Habits

Dr. Mahajan advised avoiding incorrect posture, lifting heavy objects improperly, sitting in awkward positions for long hours, and habitual cracking of fingers or twisting of the neck and back. Such habits may lead to long-term joint damage.

Natural Foods for Joint Strength

She suggested including traditional and natural foods in the daily diet:

  • Jaggery and roasted gram as good calcium sources
  • Soaked almonds for potassium and Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Milk and curd for calcium and vitamins
  • Turmeric and ginger for their anti-inflammatory properties

Dr. Mahajan concluded that a combination of balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, proper rest, and mindful posture can significantly improve joint health and prevent long-term complications.
