Difference Between Fatty Liver and Liver Cancer – Dr. Archita Mahajan

Renowned nutritionist and health expert Dr. Archita Mahajan explains that there is a significant difference between the symptoms of Fatty Liver (now medically termed MASLD) and Liver Cancer. While fatty liver often develops silently with minimal or no symptoms, liver cancer presents with severe and progressive warning signs.

🔎 What is Fatty Liver (MASLD)?

Fatty Liver is now scientifically known as MASLD (Metabolic dysfunction–Associated Steatotic Liver Disease). It has become a growing global health concern.

✔ Common Symptoms of Fatty Liver:

  • Usually no noticeable symptoms
  • Mild pain or heaviness in the upper right abdomen
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Elevated liver enzymes in medical tests

✔ Major Causes:

  • Obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • High-fat diet
  • Metabolic syndrome

According to Dr. Mahajan, fatty liver is reversible if detected early and managed with lifestyle changes. However, if ignored, it can progress to MASH (Metabolic Associated Steatohepatitis), cirrhosis, or even liver cancer.

⚠ Symptoms of Liver Cancer

Liver cancer is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

❗ Key Warning Signs:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Abdominal swelling (ascites – fluid accumulation)
  • Extreme weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dark-colored urine
  • Pale stools
  • Lump in the upper abdomen
  • Fever

Liver cancer often develops after long-standing fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, or chronic Hepatitis B or C infections.

📌 Why Doesn’t Everyone with Fatty Liver Develop MASH?

Researchers are still studying why some MASLD patients develop MASH while others do not. However, the risk increases if a person has:

  • Abdominal obesity
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High triglycerides
  • High blood pressure
  • Abnormal cholesterol levels
  • Metabolic syndrome

📊 How Common is MASLD?

Approximately 25% of people in the United States are affected by MASLD. Because symptoms are often absent, early diagnosis can be challenging.
