A fresh controversy has erupted in Sikh religious and political circles after a demand was raised for a property investigation against former and current high-ranking Sikh clerics.
Former Jathedar of Takht Sri Patna Sahib, Ranjit Singh Gauhar, submitted a memorandum to the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib seeking a probe into the properties of former Akal Takht Jathedar and current Head Granthi of Sri Darbar Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, along with former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh.
The demand comes days after Giani Raghbir Singh addressed a press conference in Jalandhar, where he raised serious questions against the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Shiromani Akali Dal.
In his memorandum, Ranjit Singh Gauhar alleged that the properties owned by the leaders, reportedly located in posh areas, should be investigated. He questioned how such wealth was accumulated during their tenure as Jathedars and called for transparency before the Sikh community.
He further stated that if concrete evidence exists regarding the allegations made by either side, it should be presented publicly to ensure complete clarity — “doodh da doodh, paani da paani.”
Earlier, the internal committee of the SGPC had reportedly issued a 72-hour ultimatum seeking proof of allegations. In response, Giani Raghbir Singh allegedly gave a two-hour ultimatum to the SGPC to present relevant documents before the Sikh community.
With the involvement of the former Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar, the controversy appears to be deepening. Whether Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Harpreet Singh will be summoned to appear before Sri Akal Takht Sahib remains to be seen.
The issue has triggered significant debate within Sikh religious and political circles, and further developments are expected in the coming days.
