Delhi Assembly Security Breach: Accused Claims He Mistook Building for Gurdwara

Delhi Assembly Breach Accused Says He Thought It Was Gurdwara

The accused in the Delhi Legislative Assembly security breach case, Sarabjit Singh, was produced before the Tis Hazari Court on Tuesday, where Delhi Police sought his custodial remand for further investigation.

According to police officials, the case is being investigated in depth, including the possibility of a larger conspiracy or terror angle. Police sources revealed that the accused abandoned his mobile phone after the incident, and efforts are currently underway to recover it.

Investigators are trying to determine why and how Sarabjit Singh managed to enter the Delhi Assembly premises and whether other individuals were involved. Delhi Police is also planning visits to Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to trace the vehicle used by the accused to reach the Assembly complex.

The incident occurred around 2:00 PM on Monday when 37-year-old Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Kajri Niranjanpur village in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, rammed a Tata Sierra car with a UP registration number through barricades at Gate No. 2 of the Assembly and entered the premises.

Wearing a mask and carrying a bouquet and garland, he approached the Speaker’s vehicle and placed the bouquet before fleeing the spot. Police later intercepted the car in the Roop Nagar area and detained Sarabjit along with two other individuals.

Delhi Police registered a case under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of attempted murder, unauthorized entry, and damage to public property.

During court proceedings, the accused’s lawyer opposed police custody, claiming that Sarabjit Singh suffers from mental illness and has been undergoing treatment since December 2025. The defense argued that he mistakenly entered the Assembly complex believing it to be a gurdwara and intended only to draw police attention toward his missing nephew, Harman Singh, who has been missing since April 1.

The family has submitted medical documents related to his treatment. However, the court questioned how the accused managed to drive alone from Pilibhit to Chandigarh and then to Delhi if he was mentally unstable.

Police have conducted a medical examination and are assessing his mental condition. During interrogation, Sarabjit reportedly said he took the step out of distress over his missing nephew.

As part of the investigation, police are also examining his social media accounts, where he had identified himself as a businessman and had earlier posted content related to farmers’ protests, which was later deleted.

Authorities are verifying his travel route — Pilibhit, Bareilly, Chandigarh, and Delhi — along with possible associates. The incident is being viewed as a major security lapse at the Delhi Legislative Assembly, and the investigation remains ongoing.
