CM Devendra Fadnavis Inaugurates Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 1, Boosting Connectivity and Public Transport Efficiency

Fadnavis Launches Mumbai Metro Line 9 Phase 1

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the first phase of Mumbai Metro Line 9, marking a major milestone in the city’s public transportation history. The service, set to begin operations from Wednesday, will directly integrate with Metro Line 7 (Dahisar–Andheri), significantly improving connectivity and operational efficiency across Mumbai’s western suburbs.

The launch introduces new metro services while strengthening the overall metro network, offering faster and more seamless travel options for daily commuters.

Mega Connectivity with Metro Lines 7 and 7A

One of the most significant technical advantages of Metro Line 9 is its integration with Line 7 and its future connection with Line 7A. The expanded network will provide uninterrupted metro access from Mira-Bhayandar to Andheri and further to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

With direct airport connectivity, passengers will no longer need to exit at Andheri station and wait in long queues for auto-rickshaws or taxis, making travel more convenient and time-efficient.

Relief from Traffic Congestion

The Mira-Bhayandar–Dahisar corridor has long been known for heavy traffic congestion. With the commencement of Metro Line 9 services, pressure on the Western Express Highway is expected to reduce significantly as more commuters shift from private vehicles to metro travel.

Transport analysts estimate that peak-hour travel time on this route could be reduced by 30–40 minutes, providing major relief to daily commuters.

Improved Train Frequency and Integrated Timetable

Following the launch, schedules for Metro Lines 2A and 7 have also been updated. Reduced waiting times and improved train frequency will help manage passenger crowds more efficiently. The integrated timetable will allow commuters to switch between lines smoothly without delays.

Eco-Friendly and Affordable Travel

In a megacity like Mumbai, pollution remains a critical concern. The expansion of the metro network is expected to encourage thousands of commuters to shift toward public transportation, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

For middle-class families, metro travel offers a safer, predictable, and cost-effective alternative compared to road transport, both in terms of fares and travel time.

Towards an Integrated Mobility System

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) aims to transform Mumbai into a multi-modal transport hub where buses, suburban trains, and metro services complement each other. The inauguration of Metro Line 9 Phase 1 represents a significant step toward that vision.

Once Line 7A becomes fully operational, commuting from northern Mumbai to southern parts of the city — including airport access — is expected to become largely traffic-free and equipped with world-class facilities.

Strengthening Last-Mile Connectivity

Alongside the metro launch, feeder buses, e-rickshaws, and bicycle stands are being expanded outside stations to improve last-mile connectivity. The expansion will also enhance the usability of the Common Mobility Card (One Mumbai Card), enabling commuters to travel seamlessly across buses, metro services, and soon suburban trains using a single payment system.
