Staff members working at the Chhidan Toll Plaza in Amritsar have announced an indefinite protest, declaring the toll plaza toll-free starting March 24, 2026, over unresolved labor demands and low wages.
According to the Toll Plaza Workers Union Punjab (Registered), employees have been working for a long time on very low salaries. On March 13, 2026, the union along with the entire staff submitted a memorandum to the company demanding implementation of wages as per labor laws.
The workers also demanded the implementation of Provident Fund (PF), Employees’ State Insurance (ESI), welfare benefits, weekly off days, and completion of required manpower at the toll plaza.
Union representatives stated that the company was given a one-week deadline to respond to their demands. However, even after eight days, no action has been taken by the management.
Toll Plaza to Remain Closed
As a result, workers announced that from the morning of March 24, the toll plaza will remain toll-free for an indefinite period. The plaza will remain completely closed until their demands are fulfilled.
Union leaders said toll operations will resume only after the company accepts and implements the workers’ legitimate demands.
State President of Toll Plaza Workers Union Punjab, Darshan Singh Ladi, General Secretary Sukhjit Singh, and Senior Vice President Rajwant Singh Khalsa stated that the entire staff stands united in the protest and will continue the agitation until justice is achieved.
The protest is expected to impact traffic movement and toll operations in the region if the issue remains unresolved.
