The Bathinda District Court on Wednesday sentenced CIA Station House Officer (SHO) Gurvinder Singh to life imprisonment in a rape case dating back to May 2021. The case had been under trial for the past four years.
According to the main witness, in May 2021, SHO Gurvinder Singh had registered a narcotics trafficking case against the victim’s son at the Cantonment police station. The witness alleged that the officer subsequently began pressuring the woman to engage in sexual relations with him.
As per court proceedings, the SHO allegedly raped the woman in his car on May 10. The following night, he reportedly went to the woman’s house and attempted to assault her again. When the woman raised an alarm, her family members and villagers gathered at the scene, apprehended the SHO, and handed him over to Nathana police station.
Following the incident, Nathana police registered a case against Gurvinder Singh under various sections, including rape. The matter remained under judicial consideration for four years before the verdict was delivered.
The witness also informed the court that during the trial, both the victim and the witness allegedly received death threats from gangsters in an attempt to force them to withdraw the case.
The court, after examining the evidence and hearing arguments, pronounced life imprisonment for the accused, marking the conclusion of the prolonged legal battle.
