Amritsar: In a major push towards urban cleanliness and sustainable waste management, the Municipal Corporation Amritsar has launched several coordinated initiatives to improve sanitation and ensure a healthier urban environment across the city.
Under the direction of the Municipal Commissioner, a robust system for 100% door-to-door waste collection has been implemented across all residential and commercial areas. Dedicated vehicles and manual rickshaws have been deployed across wards to ensure timely garbage collection and prevent accumulation at public spots.
A key technological advancement introduced by the civic body is a QR code-based monitoring system, under which nearly 150,000 households have been tagged. This system enables real-time tracking of waste collection, improving transparency and accountability in service delivery.
Further strengthening the waste management framework, the corporation is implementing an Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) project under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The initiative focuses on scientific segregation, composting, and eco-friendly disposal of waste. Special attention is being given to eliminating Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) across the city.
To modernize sanitation operations, mechanized cleaning has also been introduced, including the deployment of advanced litter-picking machines in high-density and crowded areas.
These efforts have significantly improved the daily waste collection capacity, strengthening the overall sanitation system in the city. The corporation is also actively promoting public participation by encouraging citizens to practice waste segregation and maintain cleanliness awareness.
Municipal Commissioner Amritsar Bikramjeet Singh Shergill emphasized that the corporation remains committed to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all citizens. He stated that technology integration, infrastructure improvement, and public participation are key to transforming the city’s sanitation system.
He further added that cleanliness is a shared responsibility and urged residents to segregate waste at source and support sanitation workers. The Municipal Corporation reiterated its goal of making Amritsar one of the cleanest cities in India.
