Punjab politics has heated up once again over the alleged trade agreement between the Central Government and the United States. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) termed the deal harmful for farmers and traders and staged strong protests across various districts of Punjab on Thursday.
Party workers took to the streets early in the morning, extending full support to the Bharat Bandh against the Centre’s move. Protesters were seen holding placards with slogans opposing the agreement, while raising chants against the Central Government. The political temperature in the state was visibly high during the demonstrations.
AAP leaders alleged that the Centre compromised national interests under pressure from the United States. According to them, the agreement would allow American dairy and other agricultural products to be sold in Indian markets without taxes, making it difficult for local producers to compete.
Addressing the gathering, Farmers’ Wing President Mohinder Singh Sidhu warned that such a deal could severely impact India’s agricultural system. He argued that cheaper American imports would cause heavy losses to Indian farmers and dairy operators.
The party has cautioned that if the decision is not rolled back, the agitation will be intensified in the coming days. The issue is expected to further escalate political tensions in Punjab.
