Amritsar: In a major enforcement action, the Amritsar Development Authority (ADA) carried out a demolition drive against illegal colonies being developed in villages Manawala and Rakh Jheeta along national highways and link roads.
The action was taken under the supervision of Chief Administrator Nitesh Kumar Jain (IAS) and Additional Chief Administrator Inayat (PCS), following strict directions issued by the Punjab government. Officials stated that the drive was conducted to control unregulated urban expansion and ensure planned development.
According to the District Town Planner (Regulatory Wing), the colonies were being developed without proper approvals under the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act 1995 (PAPRA). Despite repeated notices and stop-work orders, construction activities continued at the site, forcing authorities to take demolition action on April 9, 2026.
Officials further revealed that a similar illegal colony in Rakh Jheeta, located on the IIM-linked road, had already faced demolition action on August 5, 2025. However, the developers reportedly resumed construction activities, leading to fresh enforcement action and removal of unauthorized structures.
Authorities have also initiated legal proceedings against the landowners and developers. Under the amended PAPRA Act (2024), violators may face imprisonment ranging from 5 to 10 years along with fines between ₹25 lakh and ₹5 crore.
The regulatory wing has issued a strong advisory to the public, urging citizens to verify approvals before purchasing plots in any colony. Buyers have been advised to check official records and the ADA website to avoid falling victim to illegal property schemes.
Officials also warned that no construction should be carried out without prior approval from the PUDA/ADA authorities, as strict action will continue against unauthorized developments across the district.
