A wave of grief has swept across Ladakh following the sudden demise of Kargil War hero Colonel Sonam Wangchuk in Leh on Friday morning. His passing has deeply saddened the armed forces community and the nation.
Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, a decorated officer of the Indian Army, played a crucial role during the Kargil War 1999. Serving with the Ladakh Scouts as a Major at the time, he led a daring operation in the Batalik sector at an altitude of nearly 18,000 feet, successfully recapturing a strategic peak from enemy forces. This mission is considered one of the early and decisive successes of Operation Vijay.
For his exceptional bravery and leadership, he was awarded the Mahavir Chakra, India’s second-highest gallantry award, recognizing his courage and dedication to duty.
Following his demise, several leaders and officials expressed deep condolences. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vijay Kumar Saxena praised his bravery and said that his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra and former Member of Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgyal also paid tribute, describing him as an unforgettable hero.
Other leaders, including Dr. Mohammad Jafar Akhone and Tashi Gyalson, expressed sorrow over the loss, calling it an irreplaceable tragedy for Ladakh. Tashi Gyalson described him as the “true lion of Ladakh,” stating that his courage and sacrifice will always be remembered.
Colonel Wangchuk’s death marks the end of an era for many who view him as a symbol of courage, patriotism, and sacrifice.
