A controversy has intensified in Shimla over a planned Nikah ceremony involving a Muslim bride at the Ram Mandir. Several Hindu organizations have termed the move “cultural encroachment” and voiced strong objections.
The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti announced a protest, including a symbolic head-shaving (“mundan”) program, to oppose the event. After the matter became public, the wedding ceremony was moved to a mosque. However, the controversy continues to draw sharp reactions.
Committee leader Vijay Sharma stated that the group has no objection to any individual’s marriage but argued that holding a religious ceremony of this nature in a temple complex is a cultural intrusion. He said the protest is not against any community but aimed at protecting Hindu cultural identity.
Another committee member, Madan Thakur, warned that allowing religious ceremonies of other faiths in temples could blur boundaries between places of worship and escalate cultural tensions. He urged the organizing body, Sood Sabha, to avoid such arrangements in the future, stressing that marriages can be conducted anywhere but religious places should be used according to their traditions.
The dispute has triggered debate across social and political circles in Himachal Pradesh, with the issue now being widely discussed in public and political forums.
