Supreme Court Seeks Govt Response on 26 Indians Trapped in Russia-Ukraine War Zone

SC Notice to Centre Over Indians Trapped in War Zone

New Delhi: The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has now raised serious humanitarian concerns involving Indian nationals allegedly trapped in the war zone of Russia-Ukraine War.

The matter reached the Supreme Court of India after a habeas corpus petition was filed seeking the safe return of 26 Indian citizens who are reportedly stuck in conflict areas. The petition alleges that these individuals were taken to Russia under the pretext of employment and later forced into active combat roles.

During the hearing, a bench headed by Justice Surya Kant issued a notice to the Central Government and sought a detailed response within one week. The Court emphasized that the matter involves national concern and the safety of Indian citizens abroad, making urgent action necessary.

The petitioner’s counsel claimed that the situation is extremely grave, stating that some individuals are either injured or unaccounted for in the conflict zone. The Court took serious note of the allegations and directed the government to clarify the steps taken so far, including any ongoing rescue or diplomatic efforts.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the Court that the government would examine the matter and take appropriate action.

According to reports presented in the petition, the affected individuals were allegedly recruited through job offers and later deployed in combat situations without consent. It has also been claimed that their passports were confiscated and they were forced to participate in military operations.

The Court stressed that any delay in addressing the safety of citizens will not be acceptable and directed the Centre to submit a clear status report, including details of rescue measures being undertaken.

The case highlights growing concerns over human trafficking and forced recruitment linked to overseas conflict zones, turning the issue into both a legal and humanitarian crisis.

All eyes are now on the Central Government’s response, which is expected to be submitted within the next week.
