Mamata Banerjee Raises Voter Rights Issue Ahead of Bhabanipur Poll

Mamata Challenges Voter List Issue in Bhabanipur Elections

Kolkata, West Bengal: Amid the election season, Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee has raised a major political issue regarding voter rights. After filing her nomination for the Bhabanipur seat, Mamata signaled her intention to approach the Supreme Court again to address concerns affecting nearly 2.7 million voters. She also indicated readiness to confront the Election Commission directly over the matter.

Mamata appealed to the people of West Bengal to support the Trinamool Congress while expressing deep concern over the large-scale removal of names from the voter lists. She described the omission of millions of names as “extremely worrying” and said it raises serious questions about the democratic process.

Out of 12 million voters, only 3.2 million names remain on the current list. Mamata noted that while some names may be legitimately removed due to duplication or death, removing valid voters is unacceptable. She emphasized that the Supreme Court has previously clarified that voters with pending cases must retain their voting rights.

Highlighting the plight of the 2.7 million voters whose rights remain unresolved, Mamata insisted that their electoral rights cannot be denied. She added that affected voters have the option to appeal to the tribunal, but mass exclusion of voters is politically and legally concerning.

By filing her nomination from Bhabanipur and raising this issue, Mamata Banerjee has added a new dimension to the ongoing political battle. The coming days will reveal how the courts and the Election Commission respond and what impact this controversy will have on election politics in West Bengal.
