Heavy Rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, IMD Issues Orange Alert for Storms and Hailstorms

IMD Issues Orange Alert Amid Heavy Rain in Himachal

Himachal Pradesh has witnessed 120 percent above-normal rainfall over the past week, significantly disrupting weather conditions across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that relief from rain is unlikely for the next three days and has issued an orange alert for several districts due to the risk of hailstorms and strong winds.

According to the weather department, orange alerts have been issued today for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, while similar warnings will remain in place tomorrow for Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Sirmaur districts. A yellow alert has been declared for the remaining districts.

Strong Winds and Hailstorm Warning

The IMD has forecast hailstorms accompanied by strong winds blowing at speeds of 50–60 kmph, which may disrupt normal life and cause property and crop damage across the region.

Apple Growers Face Major Losses

The adverse weather conditions have raised serious concerns among apple growers and farmers. Hailstorms recorded over the past three days have already caused significant damage to apple orchards in several areas of Shimla and Kullu districts.

Reports indicate that apple blossoms have been badly affected, while anti-hail nets and bamboo support structures installed in orchards have also suffered damage.

Western Disturbance to Remain Active

Meteorologists stated that an active western disturbance will continue to influence weather conditions between April 7 and April 9, leading to intense rainfall, hailstorms, and thunderstorms, particularly on April 8.

The system is expected to weaken from April 10, although light rain may continue in higher-altitude regions. Light precipitation is also likely in mid and high hill areas on April 11 and 12.

Temperature Drops Across State

Rainfall, hailstorms, and snowfall in higher reaches during the past 24 hours have led to a noticeable drop in temperatures. The state’s average maximum temperature has fallen 2.3°C below normal, bringing back colder conditions across Himachal Pradesh.

Authorities have advised residents and farmers to remain cautious and follow weather advisories issued by the IMD.
