Interfaith Marriage Sparks Tension in Jammu & Kashmir, Woman Denies Coercion in Viral Video

Interfaith Marriage Row in J&K After Viral Video Statement

An interfaith marriage in Jammu & Kashmir has triggered tension in the Bari Brahmana area after a young woman from Baroti village, Ramika Thapa, married a Muslim man identified as Arif. The woman reportedly converted to Islam before the marriage, leading to unrest and strong reactions from her family and local residents.

According to reports, Ramika Thapa had been in contact with Arif for nearly two years before the couple recently tied the knot through a court marriage. Soon after the news reached her family, concerns escalated, with her parents alleging that their daughter had been abducted as part of a conspiracy and forced to convert her religion.

The family has appealed to the police administration to bring their daughter back and take strict legal action against Arif. They claim Ramika was threatened and pressured into changing her faith and marriage.

Meanwhile, a video shared by Ramika on social media has gone viral, presenting a contrasting version of events. In the video, she is seen sitting calmly with Arif while holding documents and rejecting all allegations made by her family.

Ramika stated that she married Arif of her own free will and voluntarily converted to Islam. She said she had been trying to convince her parents for the past two years about her decision but claimed that her family refused to accept her choice. She further added that the marriage was legally conducted in court and that she has already received police protection through legal channels.

In the same video, Ramika issued a warning to her family and relatives, stating that any harassment or legal action against her or her husband could push her to take an extreme step. She emphasized that she is an adult and has the legal right to choose her life partner.

The Bari Brahmana police are closely monitoring the sensitive matter. Although no official statement has been released yet, sources indicate that authorities are verifying the authenticity of the viral video and may soon record the woman’s formal statement as part of the investigation.

The incident has drawn significant attention online and raised debates surrounding interfaith marriages, personal choice, and family consent in the region.
