Taking another major step toward strengthening healthcare infrastructure in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Friday inaugurated a newly built modern hospital in village Cheema, named after Sant Attar Singh Ji Maharaj.
Constructed at a cost of approximately ₹11.70 crore, the 30-bed hospital is expected to emerge as a key healthcare center for residents of the region. The facility will primarily benefit nearly 50,000 people from around 15 nearby villages, while an additional 35,000–40,000 residents from adjoining areas will also gain access to affordable and quality medical services.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the Chief Minister said the hospital is not just a building but a lifeline for rural communities that previously had to travel to Sangrur, Patiala, or Ludhiana even for minor medical treatment. Equipped with modern machines and emergency services, the new facility is expected to significantly reduce healthcare challenges in the area.
During his visit, Mann reviewed hospital facilities and interacted with patients, enquiring about their well-being. He also announced that construction of a medical college in the name of Sant Baba Attar Singh would soon begin, which will promote medical education and further strengthen healthcare services in the region.
Providing historical context, officials said the healthcare center originally started in 1975 with only 10 beds, later expanded to 20 beds, and has now been upgraded into a fully modern 30-bed hospital. The hospital will offer emergency care, maternity and child healthcare, and surgical services.
Specialist doctors in ENT, dental care, and pediatrics will be available at the facility. Diagnostic services such as X-ray and blood testing, along with free maternal and child healthcare services, will also be provided. A dedicated treatment facility for drug de-addiction has also been established.
Addressing the issue of drug abuse, the Chief Minister stated that legalizing drugs is not a solution. He emphasized that the state government’s “War Against Drugs” campaign has taken strict action against drug traffickers, leading to multiple arrests and property seizures.
Highlighting government achievements, Mann said 90% of households in Punjab are receiving free electricity, more than 65,000 youths have been provided jobs, and the closure of toll plazas has saved citizens significant expenses. He added that taxpayers’ money is being reinvested into public welfare.
Cabinet Minister Aman Arora and Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh were also present at the event. The launch of the hospital is expected to give a new direction to healthcare services in the region and improve medical accessibility for rural populations.
