Cardiac Arrest Risk Increases During Skiing in Cold Weather, Warns Dr Archita Mahajan

Skiing in Cold Weather Raises Cardiac Arrest Risk

People planning skiing trips on snow-covered mountains should exercise caution, as cold weather significantly increases the risk of cardiac arrest, warns nutrition expert and wellness specialist Dr Archita Mahajan.

Dr Mahajan explained that while skiing offers excitement, speed, and adventure amid scenic snowy landscapes, there has been a noticeable rise in sudden cardiac arrest cases during skiing activities over the past two to three years. Cardiac arrest is a serious medical emergency that can become fatal within minutes if immediate treatment is not provided.

According to her, extreme cold and intense physical exertion are major triggers that increase the risk of heart-related complications. Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, a process known as vasoconstriction, which raises blood pressure and forces the heart to work harder.

She further stated that cold conditions can make blood thicker, increasing the chances of clot formation that may block arteries and lead to heart attacks or cardiac arrest. The additional workload on the heart becomes especially dangerous for individuals already suffering from heart disease.

Another factor is reduced oxygen availability in cold and dense air, which increases strain on the cardiovascular system. During skiing, sudden exposure to cold winds can sharply elevate blood pressure and constrict blood vessels, doubling the risk of cardiac arrest.

Dr Mahajan advised individuals, particularly heart patients and beginners, to undergo medical check-ups before participating in winter sports, stay properly warmed up, and avoid sudden intense physical activity in freezing conditions.
