Sesame Seeds in Winter Benefits & Risks Explained

Consuming sesame seeds during winter offers several health benefits, but they should be eaten in limited quantities, advises nutrition dietitian and wellness expert Dr Archita Mahajan.

According to Dr Mahajan, eating 1–2 teaspoons (approximately 10–15 grams) of sesame seeds daily is considered safe and beneficial for overall health during the winter season. Sesame seeds are known for providing warmth to the body and supporting immunity, digestion, and energy levels.

However, excessive consumption may lead to several health complications. Dr Mahajan explained that sesame seeds have a naturally warm potency, and overeating them can increase body heat, causing mouth ulcers, stomach burning, or even nosebleeds in some individuals.

She further noted that due to their high fiber content, consuming large amounts of sesame seeds may result in digestive issues such as gas, bloating, or diarrhea. Since sesame seeds are calorie-dense and rich in fats, overconsumption can also contribute to weight gain.

Some individuals may experience allergic reactions, including skin rashes, itching, nausea, or breathing discomfort. In rare cases, sesame seeds may increase the risk of appendix inflammation if seeds become trapped in the appendix.

Dr Mahajan also warned that excessive intake may raise uric acid levels and could interfere with blood-thinning medications. Therefore, individuals taking such medicines should consult a doctor before regular consumption.

Dr Mahajan emphasized that maintaining moderation and a balanced diet is the key to gaining maximum health benefits from sesame seeds during winter.
