BJP Councillors Allege Misuse of ₹250 Crore Central Funds in Amritsar Municipal Corporation

BJP Alleges ₹250 Crore Fund Misuse in Amritsar MC

A group of BJP councillors has accused the Amritsar Municipal Corporation administration of allegedly misusing more than ₹250 crore in funds provided by the Central Government for various development schemes.

The allegations were raised during a meeting held at the BJP district office, Shaheed Harbans Lal Khanna Memorial, where several councillors discussed the issue and demanded an investigation into the matter.

The meeting was attended by councillor group leader Gaurav Gill, deputy leader Kriti Arora, councillors Aman Airi and Vikas Gill, along with Baldev Raj Bagga and Rajesh Mehta.

According to the councillors, funds allocated under several Central Government schemes — including the National Clean Air Programme, Ayushman Arogya Scheme, AMRUT Mission, and urban reform initiatives — were allegedly utilized without consultation or approval from elected councillors. They claimed that the Mayor and Municipal Commissioner acted independently, leading to irregularities in fund utilization.

The councillor group alleged that residents of Amritsar were misled through the misuse of funds exceeding ₹250 crore that had been sanctioned with the corporation’s consent under multiple development projects. The issue was strongly opposed during the recent Municipal House meeting.

One of the major allegations concerns the purchase of four portable hospital containers under the Ayushman Arogya scheme. The councillors claimed that three containers were purchased at ₹40,48,000 each and one at ₹40,82,000, but all units were allegedly old containers. They alleged financial irregularities amounting to ₹1.62 crore under the project.

The BJP councillors have written to the Central Government highlighting the alleged joint wrongdoing by the Amritsar Mayor and Municipal Commissioner and have demanded a thorough investigation into the suspected fund scam.
